History is hard to understand because it is in the past. It is something you can not experience yourself. Although, it is something you can try to figure out. In order to do that you must take a historical perspective. Historians take a historical perspective by understanding the subjects; cultural, social, intellectual, and emotional environment. In order to do that though, you must understand the vast difference between the present and the past.

Another aspect you need is called historical empathy. Historical empathy is the capability to discern, emotionally and to experience a past individual’s life. Now you must ask yourself; can you imagine being that person? Can you imagine their emotions? Can you set aside your own morals? What are your limits to understanding?

Now in order to understand ones lifestyle and decisions, I believe you must put aside your morals and cultural beliefs. In order to see their perspective you have to understand their time and why they would believe in something. It’s like keeping your mind at a blank slate, so you can comprehend their actions and why it was justifiable to them.
